This lyric from Adrianne Lenker has stuck in my mind. I mean, it really needs to be sung to make sense as evol sounds like evil. And so it goes - Love spells evol, backwards people, words back, words back, words are lethal…
…words are lethal. That’s the part that sticks. Remember when you were young and people used say “sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never hurt you” I call bullshit. Nothing hurts more than words. Ever. Which means we have a responsibility to use them wisely. Something I don’t think people, in general, do. The things we say to our children, or the things we say to those we love, are often the worst or most damaging. And I’ve been struggling with this these past weeks. I don’t think you recover from some things. No matter how hard you try. Maybe you forget, for a bit, but you never truly do.
Anyway, perhaps there is no point to this post other than to say that you really should take time to listen to Adrianne Lenker. This album really is stunning.
