Years ago, when everyone was getting very excited by Damian Rice, I went to the Venue in Edinburgh to see Laura Veirs. Not really, I went to see her support act that evening, a little known Irish artist called Fionn Regan. I was blown away and bought his EP that night. I then actually went to see Damian Rice twice because Fionn Regan was supporting. I went to see Midlake cause Fionn Regan was supporting and finally I got to see him headline at King Tut’s in Glasgow. The End of History remains one of the finest folk albums of my generation and his career has plodded along nicely ever since. My youthful obsession with his work faded but a marathon of his albums these past few days has reignited that love leading me to O Avalanche, his latest album from the end of 2024.
It’s great. Written in Spain it feels like a sunshine record. Beautiful songs shimmering with vocal reverb and including (again) the voice of actress Anna Friel on the title track. A delightful record to brighten up the grey skies of south England in January.
Oh and check out Fionn and Anna below.
And one of the best songs
